Rocks, Sticks and Dirt

Urban Puddle Jumpers

I am often asked how I deal with my students playing with rocks or sticks, and what I do when the students get dirty. Well, I let them play with rocks, they use sticks for all sorts of things, and when they get dirty, we clean up inside. It does help that I have a saying I share with my students and parents: "Kids are supposed to get dirty!" Now, I don't let the students go crazy throwing sticks, rocks and mud at each other. As with everything else, I model behaviours, we discuss how to use materials, and there are consequences when behavioural expectations are not met. As well, I go over these expectations every time we head outdoors for exploration time until after winter break. Each picture takes you to a mini-unit or a selection of activities you can try during outdoor exploration time. Some of the activities have the curricular links from the BC Curriculum included. Please adapt these activities to fit your students’ needs. Go ahead and make some mud!
